The Finger and the Moon

“Do not mistake the finger for the moon.” – Zen Buddhism

It means that teachings, words, or symbols (the finger) are simply guides pointing toward deeper truths or reality (the moon). If you focus only on the teachings or practices themselves—instead of what they are pointing to—you miss the actual experience or realization they are meant to reveal.

This rings true in the realm of productivity. Too many times I’ve found myself spending more time learning how to be more productive and planning to take action when I could’ve simply done the things that needed doing.

Recognize when you’re procrastinating. Don’t get too wrapped up in creating the “perfect” system for being productive. You can’t do a thing while thinking about doing the thing. The quickest way to achieve a result is to take “right” action!
